Went to Bimini with a late season deal from Bimini Underseas (Keefe's).
Flew out of Ft Lauderdale on Chalk's. Left 5 min ahead of schedule on a sea
plane with maybe 8 other folks. Landed 5 minutes ahead of schedule and went
through customs in about 10 minutes. Our ride (arranged with package deal) was
waiting for us when we cleared and took us to the Big Game Resort.
Upon entering the gate at the resort we were greeted by Rich from the dive shop.
He filled us in on the day's schedule and pointed us to the front desk. I wish I
could say the girls here were as pleasant as everyone else we had encountered.
No smiles, no pleasantries - just rules and regs. The rooms at the Big Game are
nice and clean, but no luxuries. The upstairs restaurant personnel were
extremely courteous and pleasant, but the food was awful and the prices were
high.
Sunday, our day of arrival we did two dives. There were about 12-14 people on
the boat that day. Mon-Fri we had only 4-8 people and did three dives each day.
We used two boats during our stay, both were clutter free and uncrowded. Cold
drinking water and cups were provided along with a small solar rinse bag. Both
were fine for their purposes. Gear was always handled by the dive crew and ready
to go for our next dives.
The dive sites were wonderful. Divers were given a general dive plan, but were
allowed to explore in any fashion they wanted. I never turned around to see
another diverin my vicinity except on the 1 smaller dive site we did. Visibility
ranged from 40-100 feet during the time we were there. Sunday and Monday were
flat calm days with great visibility. The remainder of our stay we had choppy
seas, but the vis remained good on the deeper sites.
Mid week we packed a lunch and went a good distance from Bimini to Cat Cay and
did "wall sites". Tuna Alley being the first of the two, was overwhelming. The
vis had to be 100 or better and the vastness on the never ending wall left me
speechless. There was so much to see, I can't imagine how much I missed trying
to take it all in.
Overall I thought every dive we did had something interesting or different to
offer. Melanie was our captain/dive master on everyday except the first and her
knowledge of scuba, boats, Bimini and life in general was always entertaining if
not impressive. I would definitely return to Bimini to dive and I would use
Bimini Underseas again as well. Bimini the town does not offer much but the
diving compensates for anything that the town lacks.
