Emerald Seas Charters, Friday Harbor

Author: Scott Roberts

I've dived with Emerald Seas twice.  They are located right next to the ferry dock in Friday Harbor.  They also have a full service dive shop.  The boat takes a maximum of 6 divers out to the best sites in the San Juan Islands.  If the boat is full, it's a bit crowded, but not as crowded as other boats can get.  The boat is fairly fast, so all the dive sites are fairly close.  They can arrange a morning or an afternoon dive.

There are bungee cords along the interior of both sides of the boat.  Your tanks which are provided at no charge are strapped in with the bungee cords.  There are large platforms that allow you to take your BC and tank on and off very easily.   There are also 6 stable milk crates that hold your personal items.  The back of the boat has a fold down step that makes entry and exit a synch.  I am pretty tall.  I could see everything being a little tougher if you were short, but it's a very nice set up.  The boat has a large cabin where you can keep warm.

Tom (the owner and skipper) is very helpful.  He has been taking people out for years, so you are in good hands.  He will give you a briefing of the dive site and then you are on your own.  It's your decision to dive, and he leaves everything up to you.  If your not clear on where the reef is or what the best way to approach a dive is just ask.  He is very knowledgeable, and will try  to answer all of your questions.

I would recommend Emerald Seas Charters to anyone who wants a fist class charter experience in the San Juan Islands.
