Tacoma Narrows Bridge (West end)
Author: Scott Roberts
Location: Tacoma, WA
Difficulty: Advanced
Entry: We did this dive as a boat dive. You can access it by shore, but it's easier from a boat.
Description:
I've done this site twice. Both times we used Soundwave Scuba. They are a
charter company that runs out of Vashon Island. They dropped us off 100 yards South
of the bridge. We entered the water and descended to about 65'. We drifted
with the current to about 100 yards past the bridge.
Along the way you can see all sorts of bottom fish, and the usual Puget Sound life. directly under the bridge are huge concrete blocks that were used to hold the barges in place when they were building the bridge. Attached to the blocks are giant barnacles, anemones, crabs, and shrimp. There are several areas that have been scoured due to the current creating a lot of nooks and crannies to explore.
Our first time, the current was going at 2-3 knots, and it pushed us around a lot. The 2nd time we dove this site, we timed it perfectly, and there was virtually no current at all.
